An apprenticeship is a program that combines on-the-job training with specialized education to provide the employee with a pathway to a fulfilling career. While the employee and the company both benefit in a variety of ways, the long-term unique opportunities for the employee are paramount.
"McHenry County College currently partners with the Industrial Consortium for Advanced Technical Training (ICATT) organization to offer Department of Labor-registered apprenticeships in advanced manufacturing," explained Evelyn Seiler, Coordinator of Internship and Apprenticeship Programs at MCC. "Apprentices can train to be Industrial Maintenance Technicians or CNC Machinists; both are certificate programs leading to the AAS in Engineering Technology. The apprenticeships are five-year commitments, which include three years of education and training to complete the AAS degree and two additional years at the high-skill position for which they train." ICATT sponsors DOL-registered apprenticeships and administers the GACC international certification testing.
Work is currently underway to extend the apprenticeship concept to other career areas within and beyond advanced manufacturing. "The MCC Welding program, launched in Spring 2019, is targeted for apprenticeship expansion," added Seiler. "Careers outside the manufacturing industry also lend themselves well to the earn-and-learn concept. MCC currently has apprentices working in the culinary industry, and is exploring possibilities within the information technology and healthcare sectors."
Apprenticeship opportunities through MCC can be discovered in a variety of ways. "We're hosting several events this fall," said Seiler. "Companies can get information about our apprenticeship program at MCC's Manufacturing Breakfast event on October 23rd, and individuals can learn more during MCC Night on November 13th, through district high school career fairs and expos, and at Apprenticeship Open Houses and hiring events throughout the year."
