Woodstock's girls volleyball team finished as the runner-up at Saturday's Hampshire Invitational after dropping the championship match to South Elgin, 25-23, 25-15. Hanna Berry had 11 kills in the final for the Blue Streaks (23-2). Emma Brand added four kills and six blocks. Lauryn Hahn had eight kills, and Sophie Wicker contributed 23 assists.
Earlier in the day, Woodstock defeated South Elgin, 25-23, 25-11, behind 10 digs from Ella Wicker. Hahn had eight digs, five kills and four aces in a win over Richmond-Burton, 25-7, 25-16. Hughes contributed 10 digs and four aces in a victory over Sycamore, 25-23, 25-21. In the semifinals, Woodstock defeated Hampshire, 25-20, 25-22. Sophie Wicker had 11 assists, four kills, five aces and eight digs.
Host Hampshire went 2-3 on the day, finishing in fourth place. The Whip-Purs defeated Bartlett, 25-22, 15-25, 16-14, and Genoa-Kingston, 21-25, 25-18, 15-11, in pool play. They lost to Burlington, 18-25, 25-20 15-12, in pool play. After a loss to Woodstock in the semifinals, the Whips lost to Burlington again, 25-16, 25-10.
R-B went 0-5 on the day, finishing in eighth. Besides the loss to Woodstock, R-B lost against Sycamore, 25-23, 25-14, and South Elgin, 25-16, 25-12, in pool play. R-B lost against Bartlett and Genoa-Kingston, 25-21, 25-18, in bracket play.
Mother McAuley Invitational: At Chicago, Huntley finished seventh out of 24 teams. The Red Raiders were knocked out of the championship bracket with a loss to Mother McAuley, 25-18, 23-25, 25-17, in the quarterfinals.
Crystal Lake Central 9, Harlem 2: At Machesney Park, Billy Cummings scored four goals, and Jake Neslon had two goals and three assists in Central’s nonconference win.
Aidan Hudak, Kareem Castaneda and Brandon Bruski each scored a goal. Alberto Hernandez had an assist, and Elijah Burleson added two assists for Central (8-4-2).
Huntley 1, Cary-Grove 0: At Huntley, Thomas Rodriguez scored in the second half, assisted by Sam Bellantuono, in a Fox Valley Conference win over the Trojans (5-6-1, 2-3-1 FVC). Ethan Kornas made four saves for Huntley (7-8-1, 2-4).
Crystal Lake South 2, Buffalo Grove 2: At Crystal Lake, Alex Canfield scored a goal, and Tyler Getzinger had a goal and an assist for South in a nonconference draw. All four goals in the game were scored in the second half. Getzinger’s goal came on a penalty kick.
Carson Hill made five saves for South (10-3-4).
Badger (Wis.) 3, Harvard 1: At Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, Harvard’s Jovani Escobar scored a goal, and Oger Bernal had the assist in Harvard’s nonconference loss. Aldo Popoca made six saves for the Hornets (6-9-1).
Harvard 3, East Troy (Wis.) 1: At Lake Geneva, Bernal scored twice and Escobar scored the third goal in a win over East Troy. Angel Romo had two assists. Popoca made five saves.
Jacobs 1, Naperville Central 1: At Algonquin, John O’Connor scored Jacobs’ only goal in a nonconference draw.
Marist 8, Marian Central 1: At Chicago, Marian’s Jonathan DePrey scored the Hurricanes’ only goal with an assist from Chris Ghita in an East Suburban Catholic Conference loss. Caleb Taylor made 11 saves for the Hurricanes (8-11, 1-7).
Glenbard East Quad: At Lombard, Huntley won all three of its matches with wins over Nazareth, 5-0, Glenbard East, 4-1, and West Chicago, 3-2.
Michelle Barnvos and Kylie Phommasack went 3-0 at No. 1 doubles. Elaina Hibbeler and Dyllan Cash went 3-0 at No. 2 doubles. Ruhi Gulati (No. 1 singles) and Alessandra Rivera (No. 2 singles) both went 2-1 on the day.
Crystal Lake South Invitational: Host Crystal Lake South won all three of its matches. The No. 2 doubles pair of Katie Rokusek and Jaden Appelhans and the No. 3 doubles pair of Abby Enck and Christina Lin went 3-0 on the day.
South defeated Johnsburg, 3-2, St. Francis, 3-2, and Marian Central, 5-0.
Rockford Jefferson Invitational: McHenry finished fifth out of 13 teams with 147 points. McHenry’s 400 freestyle relay team of Paige Bantner, Andrea Avila, Riley Tobin and Melisa Nava finished in 3:59.47, good for third place. Nava placed third in two other events, as well.
BOYS CROSS COUNTRY
Peoria Invitational: At Detweiler Park, Huntley’s Ian Geisler finished third in the Class 3A race with a time of 14:34. Teammate Charlie Kucz (15:45) finished 60th.
McHenry’s Jessi Garcia (15:16) led the Warriors in 28th. Carlos Montes (15:40) finished 49th, and Ian Knebl (15:44) was 59th. McHenry had seven runners finish in the top 100 out of 244 participants.
Andrew Doetsch (15:28) led Jacobs.
Antioch Pat Harland Invitational: Marian Central’s Ryan Jones (15:16) took seventh, right in front of teammate Peter Walsdorf (15:24) in eighth place.
Crystal Lake Central’s Austin May (15:30) took 11th, while teammate Thomas Landt (16:02) was 20th. Crystal Lake South’s Alex Picchi (15:49) placed 17th, and Marengo’s Luke Chaffin (15:56) finished 19th.
St. Charles North Invitational: At Leroy Oakes Forest Preserve in St. Charles, Cary-Grove’s Maxum Caesar (15:31) finished eighth, guiding the Trojans to 12th place out of 20 teams. Teammate Ian Barnes (16:09) finished 32nd.
Daniel Llanquiman (17:31) and Jared Zuniga (17:31) finished 86th and 87th, respectively, for Prairie Ridge, which was 17th as a team. Trevor Petrin (17:58) led Jacobs in 101st.
GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY
Peoria Invitational: At Detweiler Park, Crystal Lake South’s Isabella Gonzalez (17:45) paced the Gators, who had three runners finish in the top 20 in the Class 1A/2A race. Mackenzie Aldridge (18:08) was 10th, and Addie Frisch (18:40) was 20th.
In the Class 3A race, Huntley’s Bailey Wilk (17:48) finished fourth. Molly Allen (18:19) was ninth, Breanna Burak (18:27) was 16th, and Brittney Burak (18:50) finished 26th.
McHenry’s Lydia Zancho (17:57) finished eighth. Jacobs’ Kelly Carpenter (18:24) took 14th, and teammate Alyson Doherty (19:00) was 31st.
Antioch Pat Harland Invitational: Three Prairie Ridge runners finished in the top 10, and the Wolves took first place with 57 points. Colette Janik (18:20) finished fifth, Rylee Lydon (18:30) was sixth, and Rachel Soukup (18:41) was ninth. Alaura Busch (19:40) was 20th.
Marian Central’s Siobhan Stoll (17:41) finished second, and Caroline Binotti (19:42) was 21st.
Kylie Smith (18:19) paced Crystal Lake Central, which finished third with 89 points. Annie Ferrero (18:41) took 10th, Nadia Sardjev (19:28) was 15th, and Meghan Easterday (19:30) was 16th.
St. Charles North Invitational: At Leroy Oakes Forest Preserve in St. Charles, Cary-Grove’s Morgan Dieschbourg (18:32) finished 11th and guided the Trojans into eighth place out of 16 teams.
C-G’s Delaney Blohm (19:03) took 18th, and Maggie Mason (19:05) was 20th.
Bridget Moore (20:52) led Jacobs in 75th place. The Golden Eagles were 13th as a team.
