Skyler Hammond liked what she saw from Marian Central’s softball team as a spectator last spring when the Hurricanes lost to Marengo, 3-2, for the Class 3A Wauconda Sectional championship.

Hammond was intrigued when softball friends notified her that the Marian Central coaching job was open this winter.

Marian athletic director Curtis Price announced Wednesday that Hammond had been hired as the Hurricanes' new coach. Hammond, 22, graduated from Grayslake Central in 2015 and has coached in travel softball for five years.

McHenry County College softball coach Wally Warner told Hammond about the Marian job. She called former Marian coach Erin Widmayer, who connected her with Price.

“After seeing the girls play last year, I liked how they were a family on the field,” Hammond said. “I like that Curtis is big into promoting a really positive atmosphere.”

Hammond attended Southern Arkansas University, an NCAA Division II school in Magnolia, to play softball, but a torn larbrum in her throwing arm ended her career. She finished her degree at Wisconsin-Whitewater in 2018.

Hammond was a three-year varsity outfielder at Grayslake Central. She currently coaches with the Illinois Subzero travel program in Woodstock.

Marian graduated several key players from last season, but Hammond will lean on juniors Jenna Golembiewski and Molly Fitzgerald to lead the way.

“Marian gradauted a lot of seniors; we’ll be a very young team,” Hammond said. “There weren’t any juniors last year. We’ll look to Jenna and Molly. They will be good for leadership. We have a lot of young girls looking to join the program. I’m looking forward to working with them.”
