To the Editor:
Who would have guessed it? President Donald Trump reaching across the partisan chasm to pardon the former Democratic Governor of Illinois, Rod Blagojevich.
I can’t be certain, but this could be Trump’s first “Kumbaya” moment with a Democrat. The question that begs to be asked is “why him, why now?”
I’m speculating, but maybe they’re kindred spirits with a devotion to the hair thing, maybe Patti Blagojevich did touch Trump’s heart strings with her appearances on Fox News, or possibly it was just a magnanimous gesture by our president.
In any case, Blago will find things haven’t changed much in Illinois since his second term as governor was so rudely interrupted. Boss Madigan is still calling the shots from his mountain perch and letting our new Governor, J.B. Pritzker, play “pretend.”
The state is still drowning in public pension debt and people are fleeing in droves as they try to stay out of the swirl as the state goes down the toilet.
So a heartfelt welcome back, Rod. The sentence was severe by Illinois standards, where “pay to play” is considered a parlor game. I know you’ll land on your feet, but I’d suggest boots, things are still mucky here.
