Special Olympics Illinois has canceled two major basketball tournaments this weekend due to the risk of coronavirus, the organization announced Tuesday.
The Special Olympics Illinois State Basketball Championships at Illinois State and Illinois Wesleyan in Bloomington-Normal have been canceled. Additionally, the Unified State Basketball Championships, which runs in conjunction with the IHSA state championships in Peoria, has been canceled.
Neither event will be rescheduled. Special Olympics Illinois said on its website that rescheduling "isn't feasible" due to the demand for the facilities and because securing volunteers for another date would be difficult.
Special Olympics Illinois said that, at this time, none of its athletes has tested positive for coronavirus.
“It is our goal to keep the safety of our athletes foremost in everything we do,” the organization said in a statement. “With the large number of players and others at each of these competitions, we felt it was necessary to make this difficult decision.”
Special Olympics Illinois said it is evaluating the status of future events as well.
