A 70-year-old man who tested positive for COVID-19 has died, the McHenry County Department of Health said Tuesday.

“Our hearts go out to this family at their time of loss,” said Public Health Administrator Melissa Adamson. “The health and safety of our community is our number one priority.”

The health department is working with the McHenry County Coroner’s Office to determine the man’s cause of death, according to a news release the MCDH sent Tuesday afternoon. The patient's identity has not been released

At the time of the announcement, there were 25 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in McHenry County. As of Monday, there were 14. Susan Karras, director of public health nursing, said she expects the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases to increase as the virus continues to spread.

To help protect against COVID-19, Karras recommends residents stay at home and practice social distancing of at least 6 feet. It's also advised that people check in with family, relatives and neighbors who are older than 60 or have chronic medical conditions, Karras said.

Anyone who feels ill and is experiencing worsening symptoms is encouraged to call their healthcare provider.
