Wrong-way driver leads to fatal Wauconda crash on Route 12

A fatal crash in Wauconda killed two people Thursday morning after a car traveling south in the northbound lanes of Route 12 collided head-on with a Freightliner delivery truck, according to the Wauconda Police Department.

Wauconda Police responded to the accident about 2 a.m. Thursday and the 25-year-old male driver as well as the 24-year-old male passenger of the Honda Odyssey were pronounced dead on scene, according to the police report.

The 23-year-old male driver of the delivery truck was transported to Condell Hospital in Libertyville in serious condition.

The northbound lanes of Route 12 will remain closed between South Old Rand Road and Route 176 as police investigate the crash, according to a Facebook post by Wauconda Police.

Wauconda Police are instructing drivers to avoid the area as they work to reopen the northbound lanes of Route 12, according to the post.

The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing and Wauconda Police have called upon the Major Crash Assistance Team to help them, according to the police report.

The Wauconda Fire District, Lake County Sheriff’s Office, Lake Zurich Police Department and Island Lake Police Department also assisted Wauconda Police in responding to the crash, according to the police report.
