A McHenry man was hypothermic and another man was uninjured after McHenry fire officials say a boat sank on McCullom Lake about 125 yards from shore.
The McHenry Township Fire Protection District responded at 9:34 a.m. Tuesday to the 4800 block of West Shore Drive for a report of a boat that sank with two people aboard, according to a news release.
Residents who live near the lake went into the water, boarded the boat and were navigating it toward the passengers who still were in the water when McHenry police and fire officials arrived, according to the release.
The McHenry Township Fire Protection District boarded another boat and because of other residents’ quick thinking, were able to reach the passengers and bring them to ambulances that were waiting on shore, according to the release.
One of the passengers, a 33-year-old McHenry man who was experiencing hypothermia, was treated and taken to Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital. He is expected to fully recover, according to the release.
The second passenger, a 28-year-old man from Twin Lakes, Wisconsin, was evaluated by medics but refused transportation.
The fire department emphasized that boaters should make sure their boats are safe to travel before each trip. Information about the laws regarding boat requirements can be found online at nsc.org.
