Police have arrested two men in connection with a stabbing Thursday in Crystal Lake that sent a 22-year-old man to the hospital.
Edgar Cardoso, 22, of Dwight, and Zachary M. Nunes, 20, of Woodstock, each face felony charges in connection with Thursday’s police response.
Cardoso is charged with aggravated robbery, aggravated battery, delivery of marijuana, possession of marijuana and possession of a controlled substance.
If convicted of the most serious offense, aggravated robbery, Cardoso could be sentenced to between six and 30 years in prison.
Nunes faces similar charges of delivery of a controlled substance, delivery of marijuana, possession of a controlled substance and possession of marijuana. The most serious offense, delivery of a controlled substance, typically is punishable by four to 15 years in prison.
The charges stem from a stabbing that occurred Thursday morning in the 7500 block of Redwood Street – an unincorporated area near Crystal Lake.
Police were called about 8 a.m. to a report of an altercation in the area.
When officers arrived, they learned that Nunes and Cardoso had arranged a “transaction,” although police did not say what it was regarding.
The transaction led to a fight, during which Cardoso is accused of using a knife to stab a man in the left arm, court records show.
The alleged victim, a Crystal Lake resident, was taken by the Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department to Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital, where he was treated and released, according to a news release.
Both Nunes and Cardoso left the scene in a vehicle before officers arrived, according to the release.
The investigation resulted in a search warrant that police executed about 3 p.m. at a home in the 1400 block of Commons Drive, Woodstock.
There, officers apprehended Nunes and Cardoso and seized $6,823 cash.
According to two separate criminal complaints filed with the McHenry County Circuit Clerk’s Office, Cardoso is accused of possessing more than 30 grams of marijuana, less than 15 grams of cocaine and seven Xanax pills.
Nunes, who has no criminal history, is similarly accused of possessing more than 500 grams of marijuana, less than 15 grams of cocaine and 14.5 Xanax pills, according to the complaint.
The McHenry County Public Defender’s Office was appointed to represent both men.
Cardoso and Nunes remained at the McHenry County Jail on Friday on $75,000 and $40,000 bonds, respectively. Bond hearings for both men are scheduled for Tuesday morning at the McHenry County courthouse in Woodstock.
The Woodstock and Crystal Lake police departments assisted the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office with the investigation, which is ongoing.
