To the Editor:
Donald Trump has had a historic and remarkable presidency. No President in history has been so dishonest, incompetent, unprepared and devoid of character. And remarkable because this man continues to have supporters.
Sure, politicians are known to talk a lot without saying anything. Yet Donald Trump blatantly lies like a little kid trying to con his parents despite being caught on videotape. While his previous outrageous fibs might have been “harmless” (not), now Americans are suffering and dying by the thousands.
No candidate for President, Congress, state or local representative will be perfect. Yet in a representative democracy, elected officials speak for us. What they say and do reflect our values. If they are telling easily provable lies, abusing their power, spreading hateful, hypocritical messages, then, by extension, so are we.
This isn’t a Democrat vs. Republican argument. There are many conservative, Republican leaning individuals that disagree strongly with Donald Trump and say it publicly-something very rare in politics. For others who are silent, why stick with him? Does he speak for you?
Donald Trump wants four more years of: anger, hatred; incompetence; dividing Americans; “alternative facts”; science deniers; daily drama; exploiting the weak and vulnerable; hypocrites; “good people on both sides”; corruption; record unemployment; an Executive branch with unchecked power; lawlessness; image over substance; millions more without health insurance and protections. Haven’t you had enough?
It is said that crisis reveals character. The COVID-19 pandemic has shown Donald Trump’s. Rather than fix the health and economic crises, Trump continues distracting the public with: conspiracy theories; easily disproved claims; blame-shifting to avoid responsibility; and acting with his personal best interests in mind – not the American people’s-in a desperate attempt to get re-elected.
Competence, character, judgment, honor, common sense, truthfulness, decision making ability matters in politics and in life. Politicians serve a vital democratic function for our society. We need principled leaders who serve, protect and work on behalf of hard-working, law abiding citizens and family members. Our nation deserves, and will get, better, only if we vote out Donald Trump and those officials that support him.
