To the Editor:
McHenry County Historical society Administrator Kurt Begalka’s June 20 column contains this paragraph:
“The state’s sorry pension system, burdened by constitutionally sanctioned increases that allow some public retirees to earn more than they contributed to the system, may be hit particularly hard.“
I’m at a loss to understand how Begalka’s attack on the state's “sorry pension system” has anything to do with McHenry County History.
I receive a pension from the Illinois Teachers Retirement System, and one of the charities on my annual list is the McHenry County Historical Society. I’m sure there are other state retirees who alsocontribute to the McHenry County Historical Society and Museum.
My mom and my aunt spent 82 years combined teaching in McHenry County schools. Both received meager pensions.
I get little Social Security for the many years I worked outside education, and my wife PAYSfor her Medicare because she started teaching right out of college.
Begalka should stick to history in his Northwest Herald columns and not write about something he doesn’t know anything about.
