To the Editor:
All citizens in Illinois are being asked to sacrifice. Small business owners are sacrificing parts of their livelihoods. Students are sacrificing parts of their education. Citizens are sacrificing their social lives.
But what about politicians? What are politicians and government workers sacrificing?
From our local leaders to state representatives to the governor, they need to sacrifice too. All politicians and state employees should be taking a pay cut at all levels. But while the governor talks about shared sacrifice, state workers are getting full pay and pensions, while the rest of us suffer.
The new state budget even includes pay increases for state lawmakers. It seems like Gov. Pritzker thinks one set of rules applies to him and the political class, and another to us.
Pritzker had his family jet off to their Florida and Wisconsin mansions while the rest of us were stuck inside under his overly restrictive rules. Pritzker’s arrogant mentality is too prevalent in all levels of Illinois politics.
We see it even at the township level, where abuse of spending runs wild and local politicians get rich. With so much arrogance in government, it's no wonder public officials aren't willing to take a pay cut for the good of the state.
If Pritzker truly was a leader, he’d force government to cut back just like the rest of us have to. Unfortunately, he is not. And his self-serving attitude is the problem with too many politicians in our state.
