“Physical activity is one of the best things people can do to improve their health. It’s vital for healthy aging, and can reduce the burden of chronic diseases and prevent early death,” states the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The CDC adds that 86 percent of U.S. healthcare dollars are spent treating chronic diseases. “$147 billion is used on health care costs related to obesity, and $117 billion is associated with inadequate physical activity.”
Walking is an ideal low-impact way for seniors to meet the CDC’s exercise recommendation of 150 minutes weekly of moderate physical activity. Strength exercises are recommended on two or more days a week. These strength exercises should work all the major muscle groups in the legs, hips, back, abdomen, chest, shoulders, and arms.
Judy Nordschow, director of Sales and Marketing, Fox Point, a senior lifestyle community in McHenry, sees the benefits for seniors who attend Fox Point’s daily exercise classes and walking club. She says, “Seniors who exercise have increased longevity and they feel better. Every morning we host exercise classes including chair yoga and other types of movement. The classes are filled, and the seniors are having fun socializing while moving. They enjoy the walking club, which we host indoors during the winter, and outdoors when the weather is pleasant.
“All seniors can benefit from exercise programs. If they live at home, they can find great classes at local senior centers or gyms.” Exercise helps seniors gain better mobility, which improves balance that helps reduce falls.
According to SilverSneakers.com, the nine best types of exercise for older adults include: swimming, yoga, Pilates. bodyweight training, resistance-band training, walking, cycling, plus strength and aerobic classes. “Stay strong, be safe, and maintain your independence by integrating these top fitness options into your exercise plan.”
